What you didn’t know about Ibeju Lekki ?

Well I’m guessing you’ve heard something about Ibeju Lekki, could be the refinery, the fertilizer plant, the free trade zone and the likes, but I’m about to tell you something that would make people wonder if I’m trying to loose my job on purpose ?, but before I dive into this, I would want us to visit a story.

The story is about Amosite Abestos, well what does this word mean ?

Abestos is a term used to refer to six naturally occurring silicate minerals. All are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals, each fibre being composed of many microscopic ‘fibrils’ that can be released into the atmosphere by abrasion and other processes. Okay enough with the scientific talk, here’s what we need to know

Primarily mined in South Africa most commonly in the Northern Cape area, amosite is characterized by sharp, brittle, needle-like fibers that can be easily inhaled. Amosite makes up about five percent of asbestos materials used in buildings in the United States making it the second most commonly used type of asbestos.

Yes Abestos is very important ?

Asbestos is an excellent electrical insulator and is highly heat-resistant, so for many years it has been used as a building material.

Asbestos mining was good business in south africa with major engineering marvels to transport the goods over long distance with ease. They invented high tension wires transport system that was almost 100% reliable. This high tension wired system was created in such a way that bother the weight baskets coming into the refinery and the ones leaving had to be perfectly balanced. The only way to do this was to balance the substance at the mining end of the transport system and oil for mining operations ?? at the other end.

Business was booming for years ?

Then it happened ?

A lot of miners started getting sick, people who operated on Abestos also started getting sick and not just sickness but with a special case of cancer. Soon there was serious research and it was found that the substance they mined was actually the cause, this caused serious decline, people who rushed to cite their businesses close to the mine relocated for health reasons, people flocked out in their thousands, businesses shout down all over the surrounding towns close to the mines and finally the mine shut down in the early 2000s due to bankruptcy. The mining companies had to pay miners and their families for cancer treatments.

“It’s now a well-known health and safety hazard and the use of asbestos as a building material is illegal in many countries. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can lead to various serious lung conditions, including asbestosis and cancer.”

Now you have learnt something, we all need to be cautious of the health hazards that come with locating close to some of these projects (the refinery, fertilizer plant, deep sea port, airports and many more)

Now let me pick one of the major projects or let’s say the king of all projects in Ibeju Lekki

THE DANGOTE REFINERY

Now looking at a refinery we also need to study the hazards and use previous scenarios as case study for sighting a property near to a refinery. Hazards associated with refinery location include fire, explosion, toxicity, corrosiveness, and asphyxiation. ? Yes I said it but let’s look at USA, Texas this time.

Let’s skip all the good years and go straight to the bad part ?

The Texas City Refinery explosion occurred on March 23, 2005, when a hydrocarbon vapor cloud was ignited and violently exploded at the ISOM isomerization process unit at BP’s Texas City refinery in Texas City, Texas, killing 15 workers, injuring 180 others and severely damaging the refinery.

“The pressure wave was so powerful it blew out windows off site up to three-quarters of a mile (1.2 km) away. Area estimated at 200,000 square feet (19,000 m2) of the refinery was badly burned by the subsequent fire that followed the violent explosion, damaging millions of dollars worth of refinery equipment.

Yes you can loose it all of you are not wise but that’s not all because there was another hazard.

Asphyxia or asphyxiation is a condition of deficient supply of oxygen to the body that arises from abnormal breathing. Asphyxia can cause coma or death. Simply put, you would feel like you have corona virus without the fever, that drowning sensation.

Now you may be asking, whats the way forward? What can I do now? Where can I site my property ? I want to be part of the economic boom coming to Ibeju Lekki, but I want a development that can still be safe.

The answer is it must be cited at least 1.5km away from the refinery. No vague answers.
